Leadership Lessons

The September issue of Harvard Business Review includes an intriguing article, The Higher Ambition Leader, discussing the attributes of “a new breed of CEO” focusing on “powerful strategic visions”, “widespread commitment and capabilities to achieve those visions” and the “strength of character” to achieve those visions over the long haul. Reading the article, I couldn’t help but be struck by how similar the attributes of a higher ambition leader are to those described by professional services firm (PSF) managing partners and CEOs in a series of interviews conducted for Maureen Broderick’s book The Art of Managing Professional Services. Maureen summarized her findings on PSF leadership in “Not a Job for the Faint of Heart”, one in a series of Lessons from Leaders articles. It would seem PSF leaders have a great deal to share with corporate America.
